My client, a genuinely independent small animal practice in Kent, is looking for an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join its friendly and supportive team on a permanent basis.
This is a 30-hour-per-week position worked across Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with just one Saturday morning in four. The practice is particularly interested in a higher-skilled general practitioner with strong diagnostic ultrasound ability who is comfortable using ultrasound as part of everyday clinical investigations and case work-ups.
The role offers genuine clinical freedom within a collaborative environment. Vets are trusted to make appropriate decisions based on each patient and client, while being encouraged to discuss challenging or unusual cases with the wider clinical team.
Working Pattern
Wednesday: 9am–6:30pm
Thursday: 9am–6:30pm
Friday: 9am–6:30pm
One Saturday in four: 9am–12 noon
Approximately 30 hours per week
Opportunity to provide additional holiday or absence cover
Additional full days paid at an agreed day rate on top of salary
The Role
This is a varied general practice position incorporating:
First-opinion consultations and clinical examinations
Medical and surgical case management
Diagnostic investigations and clinical work-ups
Routine abdominal ultrasound examinations
Interpretation of ultrasound findings
Routine and non-routine surgery appropriate to experience
Development and discussion of treatment plans
Management and follow-up of ongoing cases
Preventative healthcare and client education
Accurate clinical record keeping
Responsible prescribing and dispensing
Collaboration with the veterinary, nursing and reception teams
Referral of cases when clinically appropriate
Clinical Facilities
The practice is equipped to investigate and manage a broad range of cases internally, with facilities including:
Diagnostic ultrasound
Digital radiography
IDEXX in-house laboratory analysers
Full access to the IDEXX external laboratory
High-quality dental equipment
Surgical facilities
Diagnostic and patient-monitoring equipment
Please note that the practice does not currently have dental radiography.
About You
The practice is looking for a Veterinary Surgeon who:
Is registered with the RCVS and eligible to practise in the UK
Has substantial small animal general practice experience
Is confident undertaking and interpreting abdominal ultrasound examinations
Can use ultrasound effectively within everyday case investigations
Is confident with consultations and general small animal medicine
Is comfortable undertaking routine surgical procedures
Manages cases independently while recognising when collaboration or referral is appropriate
Provides an excellent standard of patient and client care
Communicates confidently with clients and colleagues
Enjoys working within a smaller, close-knit team
Is willing to share their ultrasound skills and clinical knowledge
Values the professional freedom offered by independent practice
The successful vet will be encouraged to contribute ideas, support colleagues and share their ultrasound knowledge with the wider clinical team.
Salary and Benefits
Indicative salary of £52,000–£60,000, depending on experience
