Head Registered Veterinary Nurse Newcastle £34,000 to £37,000

My independent client in Newcastle is seeking an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse to lead its nursing team across two well established sites.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident and compassionate nurse who is passionate about clinical standards, patient care and developing others. You will play a central role in the day to day running of the practices, working closely with the Practice Manager, Lead Vet and Directors.

The role

• Permanent Head Registered Veterinary Nurse
• 40 hours per week
• Weekends shared on a rota
• Salary from £34,000 to £37,000
• Working across two Newcastle sites
• Independent small animal practice
• Clinical leadership alongside operational responsibilities
• Supportive and friendly team culture

Key responsibilities

• Leading and motivating the nursing and auxiliary teams
• Overseeing nursing rotas, workflow and workload management
• Maintaining excellent standards of patient care, hygiene and infection control
• Supporting surgical and medical nursing, anaesthesia monitoring and inpatient care
• Developing the practice’s nurse clinics and ensuring the nursing team is fully utilised
• Reviewing existing protocols and contributing to new standard operating procedures
• Supporting compliance with RCVS, health and safety and other regulatory requirements
• Coaching and mentoring the nursing team through training, appraisals and career development
• Coordinating student nurse training and liaising with training providers
• Supporting recruitment, onboarding and retention
• Assisting with stock control, ordering and budgeting
• Processing complex insurance claims and supporting colleagues with other claims
• Working with the practice’s charity partners
• Contributing to management meetings and practice improvement projects

About you

You must be an RCVS registered veterinary nurse with at least three years of post qualification experience in small animal practice or another relevant setting.

You will also need:

• Previous leadership or supervisory experience
• Confidence across clinical nursing, anaesthesia and patient care
• Strong organisational and communication skills
• The ability to manage, motivate and support a team
• A genuine interest in mentoring and developing others

Previous Head RVN or senior nursing experience would be advantageous. A Clinical Coach qualification, experience using EzyVet and an interest in clinical governance or quality improvement would also be welcomed, although these are not essential.

The practice is also seeking a locum RVN from the beginning of October on an ongoing basis. Ideally, the locum will cover Monday to Wednesday each week, with additional hours available if desired.
