Veterinary Nurse – Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) – Surrey
ECC Hospital | Days & Nights | 12-Hour Shifts | Established Veterinary Group
Love the side of veterinary nursing where your skills really get put to the test?
My client in Surrey is looking for an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse to join their Emergency & Critical Care team, working within a busy hospital environment and caring for patients when they need veterinary support the most.
This is a genuinely hands-on ECC nursing position for someone who enjoys challenging cases, thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment and wants to use the full extent of their nursing skills.
You'll work closely with veterinary surgeons and fellow RVNs to manage a varied emergency and critical care caseload, with nurses encouraged to take an active role in patient management rather than simply assisting from the sidelines.
The Role
Working a mixture of 12-hour day and night shifts, you'll be involved in the assessment, stabilisation, treatment and ongoing nursing care of emergency and hospitalised patients.
Cases can change quickly, so you'll need to be comfortable prioritising patients, thinking practically and adapting as the shift develops.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Emergency and critical care nursing
• Triage and initial patient assessment
• Monitoring and caring for unstable and critically ill patients
• Supporting emergency procedures and surgery
• Anaesthesia and patient monitoring
• Post-operative and recovery care
• Inpatient nursing and treatment administration
• Working closely with veterinary surgeons on case management
• Maintaining accurate clinical records and treatment plans
• Supporting junior and less experienced members of the nursing team
• Maintaining excellent standards of patient care throughout your shift
A Role Where Your Nursing Skills Matter
ECC nursing is very different from a traditional first-opinion day.
You're often caring for complex patients whose condition can change rapidly, and having experienced, confident nurses on the floor makes an enormous difference.
My client values RVNs who can think ahead, recognise changes in their patients and communicate effectively with the veterinary team. You'll be encouraged to use your experience, practical skills and clinical judgement while always having the wider team around you when you need support.
The Hospital
You'll be joining part of an established veterinary group with a dedicated hospital supporting its network of primary care practices.
The hospital environment provides exposure to a broad and interesting caseload, with emergency patients alongside cases requiring more intensive investigation, treatment, surgery and hospitalisation.
For an RVN who genuinely enjoys ECC, this offers the opportunity to develop far beyond routine nursing and continue building confidence with more challenging patients.
Who We're Looking For
This position would particularly suit an RVN who already has experience within emergency, critical care, hospital or referral nursing and is confident working with acutely unwell patients.
You'll ideally be:
• RCVS registered
• Experienced in ECC, hospital or emergency nursing
• Clinically confident and practically skilled
• Comfortable caring for critically ill and unstable patients
• Confident working both day and night shifts
• Calm and organised when priorities change quickly
• A strong communicator
• Proactive and able to use your initiative
• Supportive of junior colleagues and developing nurses
• Passionate about providing exceptional patient care
The Rota
The role involves a mixture of:
• Day shifts – 8:00am–8:00pm
• Night shifts – 8:00pm–8:00am
The combination of days and nights would suit someone who enjoys the variety of hospital nursing and wants a role where no two shifts are quite the same.
Why Consider ECC?
If you've reached the point where routine nursing no longer challenges you enough, this could be an excellent opportunity to take your experience further.
You'll see interesting and often complex cases, work alongside an experienced clinical team and have the opportunity to make a very real difference to patients during some of their most critical moments.
Most importantly, you'll be joining an environment where experienced nurses are valued for their knowledge and encouraged to play an active role in the clinical team.
